GOMBAK, 9 January 2025: Teaching English as Second Language Students’ Society (TESS) organised its annual event, TESL Night to celebrate the conclusion and change of tenure from 23/24 to 24/25 in the Banquet Hall of IIUM Gombak on 27 December 2024.
It had the ‘royalty’ theme, as all participants donned suits and beautiful gowns – the event began with an opening speech by TESS advisor, Dr. Haziqah Zulaikha. In her remarks, she expressed her appreciation towards the 23/24 tenure in bringing the department to life through many successful programs and hoped the new tenure would continue to flourish.
In a speech by 23/24 TESS president, Nur Irdina binti Zanum, acknowledged her members’ hard work and dedication, asserting, “You have given your best and I very much appreciate it.” She then thanked Dr. Haziqah, saying “Your guidance has been my anchor.”
“Leadership is not about who is the loudest or the boldest, but rather who is leading with heart and sincerity because, in the end, it is the mark you leave behind that matters,” she added as she marked the conclusion of her tenure.
The crowning of the event saw the substitution of tenure and rebranded name of TESS to TESLA (TESS Students’ Association) with a special entrance and a gimmick performance by the new tenure, followed by the Bai’ah (oath) ceremony led by the new president, Nurshakila binti Tumin.
In an interview with IIUMToday, Sr. Shakila expressed her appreciation towards the previous tenure and stated her excitement, saying, “I am happy and honoured to become the new president of TESLA and am very excited to work with newly elected TESLA members.”
Some of the interesting activities during the event included best dress awards for the King and Queen, lucky draw sessions, and special instrumental performances.
The event concluded with a token of appreciation for Dr. Haziqah Zulaikha and a photography session with all participants.***
