GOMBAK, 29 May 2025:  CyberSecurity Malaysia urged students to become digital leaders in their own homes. With technology playing a big part in everyday life, students are encouraged to use the internet safely, avoid online dangers and promote this to their families.

The forum on this took place during Communication Festival 2025 today, which featured an executive from the Outreach Unit of CyberSecurity Malaysia, Syahmi Kamarul Baharin. Speaking to an audience of students, Shahmi highlighted the importance of taking proactive roles in guiding family members, especially younger siblings in building a safer online environment.

He introduced the notion that digital safety begins at home. “Parents must not only be aware of what their children are doing online but also must guide and lead by example,” said Syahmi. He stressed the importance of digital vigilance, responsible content sharing, and open communication between parents and children in the digital age.

“Digital leadership isn’t just for those in power or with authority. You, as students, are already playing the role of digital leaders at home,” he said.

The forum differentiated between digital parenting traditionally associated with parents monitoring and guiding their children’s online activities and digital leadership, which places the responsibility on tech-savvy individuals in the family, including the youth, to influence others positively in the digital realm.

The forum continued with a scammer alerting awareness message by sharing two beneficial websites where audiences can check if their accounts have been breached by online predators or not. The websites shared by Syahmi were: https://app.pentester.com/login and https://haveibeenpwned.com.

This forum was an eye-opening insight for everyone who attended where at the end, audiences started to feel more cautious of their data and the digital footprints they made online. This forum again emphasized, at the tip of our finger, everything could happen in a second and it all starts with today’s generation of youth who can spread awareness about the dangers of cybersecurity.***
