As the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED) celebrates three decades of academic excellence and values-based design, it has reached another significant milestone in its mission to serve the ummah. The formalization of a strategic partnership between the Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP) and KAED, IIUM highlighted by a prestigious student design competition, marks a new chapter in the Kulliyyah’s journey, one where the philosophy of Khalifah (stewardship) is actively translated into tangible community impact.
The recently concluded Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony serves as a foundational bridge between the academic rigour of IIUM and the strategic social welfare objectives of MAIWP. This partnership is more than a formal agreement, it is a convergence of purpose. By aligning MAIWP’s deep-rooted commitment to supporting the asnaf with KAED’s expertise in sustainable and human-centric design, both institutions are creating a framework to address urban challenges through the lens of social justice and Islamic values.
At the heart of this collaboration lies the MAIWP-KAED student design competition, a platform that challenges the next generation of designers to move beyond the drawing board and engage with the real-world needs of the community. Under the dedicated leadership of the Project Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Suzilawati Rabe, the competition serves as a crucible for practical application, ensuring that students’ conceptual work is deeply rooted in social empathy and technical precision.
For the students of KAED, the competition represents the practical application of the values instilled since the faculty’s inception in 1996. Tasked with conceptualizing designs that are both functional and spiritually grounding, participants have been pushed to consider how architecture can act as a catalyst for dignity, community cohesion, and economic empowerment. Whether designing spaces for social support or innovating affordable living environments, the students’ proposals demonstrate a keen understanding of the built environment professionals’ role as agents of positive change.
This initiative reflects the current vision of the Kulliyyah under the leadership of Prof. TPr Dr. Mariana Mohamed Osman, who continues to drive the kulliyyah toward modern, resilient, and socially relevant outcomes. By facilitating such industry and community-led collaborations, KAED ensures that its graduates are not only technically proficient but are also deeply attuned to the societal responsibilities that define their profession.
As MAIWP and KAED embark on this joint venture, the MOU stands as a testament to the idea that the built environment is ultimately about people and communities. By bridging the gap between academic expertise and the realities on the ground across the Federal Territories, this partnership reinforces KAED’s enduring commitment to creating meaningful impact through education, research, and professional engagement, while contributing to a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future for the ummah.***
