Newly Appointed PM of Somalia is IIUM Alumnus

GOMBAK, 2 December 2022: A senior lecturer at Mogadishu University, His Excellency Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre, was appointed as the 21st Prime Minister of Somalia on 15 June 2022 by the 8th and 10th President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, succeeding the 20th Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble.

Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre, 48, holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Technology Yemen (USTY) and a Master of Management degree from IIUM.

He served at a school in Mogadishu as the Executive Director of the Formal Private Education Network in Somalia (FPENS) for one year, from 2003 to 2004 and became the co-founder of a private university in Somalia, Kismayo University in 2005.

After obtaining his Master’s degree from IIUM in 2009, he pursued his career as a full-time educator in Mogadishu and Kismayo.

His political career started from 2011 to 2017 under the governance of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the Secretary-General of the Peace and Development Party.

He was also the Administrative Adviser for Hassan Mohamed Hussein, the Governor of Banaadir and the Mayor of Mogadishu, from 2014 to 2015.

He served as the senior adviser to Somalia’s Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and Federalism and as the Chairman of the Jubbaland Electoral Commission during the ruling of Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, Somalia’s ninth President from 2019 to 2020.

The Administrative Board of the IIUM congratulated Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre for his appointment as the Prime Minister of Somalia and wished for his success in carrying out his responsibilities.***
