A step towards global engagement and sustainable community development

GOMBAK, 20 March 2025: The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) had officially welcomed students from Universitas Darussalam (UNIDA) Gontor for the International Community Service Program (KKN). This initiative is part of the ongoing collaboration between IIUM and UNIDA Gontor, following the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two institutions.

The opening ceremony commenced with an orientation session introducing the students to IIUM’s platforms, facilities, and community engagement framework. The session highlighted IIUM’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and ethical development in community service.

Empowering Students through Innovation and Technology.

The initial briefing introduced the participants to IIUM Makers Space, a creative hub supporting technological innovations. Equipped with 3D printing machines, Virtual Reality (VR) tools, and assistive technology for persons with disabilities, the space allows students to explore solutions that integrate modern technology with social impact.

Additionally, the students explored Games MY, IIUM’s game development studio, which focuses on research driven educational projects. One of its flagship games, Gelisah, is designed to assess anxiety levels, reflecting IIUM’s unique approach to developing ethical and value-based technology.

Sustainability and Entrepreneurship in Community Engagement.

The UNIDA Gontor students were also introduced to IIUM’s Kelulut Honey Project, an initiative that fosters entrepreneurship through sustainable agriculture. With over 30 beehives hosting nine different species, the project not only contributes to the economy but also serves as a platform for community empowerment, aligning with the KKN program’s objectives.

Moreover, students engaged in discussions on Aqua Green, a water management and environmental sustainability initiative that has received an RM 40,000 grant from CIMB Bank. This project is one of the many sustainability driven initiatives at IIUM that will be incorporated into the students’ community service experience.

IIUM’s Holistic Approach to Community Engagement

The participants also had the opportunity to learn about Usrah in Action, a community-based service program that spans two semesters (14 weeks of activities). This model provides students with insights into structured and sustainable community service that goes beyond conventional outreach efforts.

Exploring Further Academic Opportunities at IIUM.

During the closing session, students were introduced to postgraduate study opportunities at IIUM, including master’s and doctoral programs. The session also covered scholarship schemes for international students, reinforcing IIUM’s commitment to fostering academic and professional development.

A Step Towards Strengthening International Collaboration.

The International Community Service Program strengthens the academic and social partnership between IIUM and UNIDA Gontor and opens doors for students to engage in impactful and innovative projects. With a focus on technology, entrepreneurship, and sustainability, this initiative is set to become a model for international community service programs that create lasting and meaningful change.***
