GOMBAK, 3 May 2018: The pathways for disabled students in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) campus here will get a facelift within this year.
The plan to redesign the pathways for the disabled was raised in the Student Representative Council (SRC)’s motion during the last IIUM Student Leaders Assembly (ISLA).
Mohamad Nasrul Mohamad Nor, who is a member of SRC’s Disabled Students Constituency, expressed the problems faced by disabled students when the pathways meant for them have always been used by normal students.
He said, “Everyone can see at parking area in front of the HS building, where motorcycles are filling in almost every area, thus, there is no space for disabled students to move especially those who are on wheelchairs.”
“So far, we are working on a plan to redesign the parking areas and special routes for OKU, because for some students, they do not know or do not see any sign of OKU area,” he added.
In addition, he also explained that the SRC and an association for disabled students, I-MAC, will organise a campaign to raise awareness.
“I have also proposed to I-MAC to jointly raise awareness about this OKU path and parking for all IIUM community,” he said.
Asked what can be done by the normal community to help with this awareness, he explained that normal students can report any issue found through STUDA app.
“Normal IIUM community can help report any OKU area found to be colourless or misused, to the STUDA app, to which further action will be taken,” he said. ***
