GOMBAK, 19 November 2024: The 40th IIUM Convocation Ceremony on 17 November at IIUM Gombak, was made very special by the valedictorian speech of the best student (Academic) of Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL), Ahmad Harith Bin Johari. He mentioned his sources of strength being faith, hope, and gratitude, and these words moved the audience.
After recalling the struggles they had gone through in their studies, Ahmad Harith mentioned, “The question then is – how do we move forward in the face of uncertainty? I believe that the solution is simply a matter of perspective.” He urged his fellow graduates to perceive difficulties positively and hold on to the good values that have been inculcated within them by the IIUM.
Highlighting the responsibilities of khalifah on earth, he quoted from the Qur’an, Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:8): “You should act justly because a just attitude is closer to taqwa. And fear God. Indeed, Allah knows best what you do.” He laid down the principle that justice and sincerity have to always form the ground for the decisions and the actions they make.
Mentioning in Malay, he urged his fellow graduates to unite for justice, by saying, “Jangan sesekali membiarkan dunia ini memesongkan kita ke jalan yang sesat. Marilah kita bersatu dan menjadi pembela keadilan dengan hati yang tulus dan niat yang ikhlas.”
Ahmad Harith also expressed his appreciation to AIKOL academics for being committed to producing future leaders, as the university is ‘the garden of knowledge and virtue’. To his fellow graduates he said, “Your strength, perseverance, and sense of camaraderie are inspiring qualities. It has been an honour to cross paths and a privilege to become friends.”
Praising his parents with all his heart, he said, “Papa, Mama, I do not often say it out loud, but I love you forever.“ People were touched by this emotional speech that left the audience teary eyed.
In the final lines of his speech, Ahmad Harith called on his peers to stay committed and to be wise. “When life brings us to crossroads, we must ask ourselves what matters most. I hope you choose wisely and remember Allah is the Most Merciful,” he said, getting a standing ovation for his speech that earned him a thundering applause.***
