GOMBAK, 17th October 2024: Dr. Bisma Parvez was conferred the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in engineering and awarded the esteemed Best Student Award in the 40th IIUM Convocation Ceremony at IIUM Gombak, on 16 November.
She hails from the valley called paradise on earth – Kashmir. From the serene landscapes of Kashmir to the academic corridors of Malaysia, Dr. Bisma delineated her poignant journey in an exclusive interview with IIUMToday.
“I was a curious child, and my curiosities led me to the endless pursuit of knowledge,” shared Dr. Bisma. Dr. Bisma’s passion in conducting research studies drove her to seek opportunities abroad, ultimately choosing the IIUM as the institution to fulfil her dreams so she chose the Kulliyyah of Engineering at the IIUM.
The journey to her Ph.D. was not without challenges. “Life was not smooth, and neither was my academic path,” Bisma admitted. Culture shock, adjustment problems and homesickness tested her resilience. However, where she could have let hardship beat her down, she started harnessing strength by welcoming Malaysian food, culture and the professional environment.
Her perseverance paid off as she devoted herself to her studies, worked with people from different fields, and formed deep relationships. “I realized the human mind has no limits, Allah (SWT) has blessed us with an infinite power of learning,” she stated, reflecting on her experience. “Together, we can make the world a better place, the IIUM song, struck a deep chord with me. I learned the power of ‘we'”.
Receiving the Best Student Award at the convocation was a moment of fulfilment for Dr. Bisma. “This award symbolizes the recognition of my hard work and dedication. However, appreciation begins with oneself. Believing in oneself and staying self-motivated helped me navigate challenges,” she emphasized. Bisma thanked her professors, friends, and everyone who supported her journey. “Surround yourself with good people—they contribute immensely to your growth,” she added.
Dr. Bisma is currently a lecturer at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, teaching engineering courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students. “It gives me immense pleasure to share my knowledge and benefit future generations. The growth and understanding I gained at the IIUM have profoundly influenced my teaching and mentoring style,” she remarked.
Dr. Bisma’s message to IIUM’s current and future engineering students is clear: “Work hard and trust in your abilities. Don’t underestimate your infinite power to think, learn and grow. Trust in Allah (SWT), seek His help in difficult times as the Qur’an says, ‘His help is near; He is closer to you than your jugular vein.’***
