IIUM Press launches IIUM Book Festival 2024

Gombak, 17 October 2024: The successful launch of the book festival held in the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED) took place today. This is the second year of the festival, taking place from 17 October 2024 to 19 October 2024. It is aligned with the Malaysian Ministry of Education’s national reading campaign in encouraging knowledge sharing within the community.    

The launch commenced with the welcoming remarks by the Director of IIUM Press, Professor Dr. Noor Lide Abu Kassim. She emphasised the importance of nurturing a knowledgeable community that is a reading community. In her speech, she promoted the IIUM Press Waqf Ilm project.

She said, “The project is an initiative to make knowledge more accessible. Currently, the project seeks donations in order to provide new books for the community. This project is a platform provided for the IIUM community with invaluable access to hundreds of digital books published by IIUM Press. Hence, it is in line with the vision to promote knowledge and disseminate knowledge for all.”

The launch was officiated by IIUM President, Tan Sri Samsudin Osman. In his speech he said, “the festival is a celebration of knowledge and wisdom that transcends borders, cultures and generations. It plays a vital role in fostering the culture of reading and intellectual growth.”

He mentioned, “a written word is a powerful tool in shaping not only individuals but the entire community. That literature can serve as a bridge connecting us with one another and with the larger world.”

The IIUM book festival included the IIUM Press Book Awards to celebrate the writers’ intellectual contribution to the community. A total of five awards and four certificates to recipients. The winners were acknowledged at the festival:

The first award session appreciated the following winners:

Best academic book in Malay – had no winner for 2024

Best academic book in English – “Industrial First Aid,” by Prof. Dr. Salizar Mohamed Ludin and Mohamad Husair Sajahan 

Best academic book in Arabic – “Al Lughah Al Tha Nyall: Madkhal Tatbiqi Fi Tatbiqi Fi Al Talim Wa Talum,” by Dr. Erfan Abdeldaim Mohamed Ahmed Abdella 

Best textbook for foundation studies – “Biology 1 Workbook,” by Muhammad Ng Chee Hong and Nor Sa’adam Mond Nasohah

Best textbook for degree programme – “Finance for accounting students” (second edition) by Prof. Dr. Suhaiza Ismail, Dr. Nori Yani Abu Talib, Dr. Morni Hayati Jaafar Sidik and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nazrul Hisyam Ab Razak 

The Second Award Session saw the following winners:

Certification of appreciation for the highest number of books – IIUM’s Dar al-Hikmah Library

For the Academic staff category – Dr. Muntaha bin Artalim Zaim (AHAS Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences)

For the Administrative staff category – Yusnida Binti Fuad (Dar al-Hikmah Library)

For the Postgraduate students’ category – Abdulrahman (Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance)

For the Undergraduate students’ category – Rahman Tahmidur (Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences)

These awards and certificates were given by the IIUM Rector, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Osman Bakar; Tan Sri Samsudin Osman and Professor Dr. Noor Lide Abu Kassim to the winners of each category.

The IIUM Press aims to strengthens its ties with the book industry, increase it sales and build collaborative relationships with local publishers and distributers, promote incredible works produced by itself and encourage a deeper appreciation of reading in the community.

The event was organised by IIUM Press and student society committees from AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (AHAS KIRKHS) in collaboration with Dar al-Hikmah Library.***
