GOMBAK, 29 November 2023: It was the highest point for Dr. Shaban Sama Naziyah Shaban, who celebrated the highest point of her academic journey in Malaysia with the completion of a PhD in Pharmacology that was conferred on her in the first session, on 25 November 2023, at the 39th IIUM Convocation Ceremony.
Originally from Iraq, Dr. Shaban moved to Malaysia with her parents and completed her high school education in Kuantan, Pahang. Driven by a deep passion for the field of pharmacology, she then embarked on her doctoral journey, delving into research on wound healing and the benefits of natural products.
In an exclusive interview with IIUM Today, Dr. Shaban revealed that her parents, both medical doctors, served as her primary sources of inspiration. As the eldest in the family, this position motivated her to push harder and continue on her academic journey.
Dr. Shaban emphasized the transformative power of knowledge, stating, “The more you seek knowledge, the more you will want to complete your research. Knowledge gives us power.”
Reflecting on the challenges she faced when studying, Dr. Shaban further highlighted the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on her research study.
“The struggle was real when my research had to pause during the pandemic. Despite significant progress, I had to restart after the lifting of restrictions. There were moments when I considered giving up, but looking at the bigger picture and my future goals, they motivated me to persist.”
Expressing gratitude for her experience in Malaysia, Dr. Shaban spoke warmly about the country. “Malaysia is an amazing place. I fell in love with the food, culture and the warmth of its people. I cannot imagine my life without this incredible experience.”***
