Changing programme, no obstacle for graduate in achieving Rector’s List Award

GOMBAK, 27 November 2023: “No words can describe the feeling,” expressed recent Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT) graduate ‘Iffah Dalalin Binti Mohd Helme when describing her journey in the IIUM.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) at the 39th IIUM Convocation Ceremony on Sunday (26 November 2023), and achieved the Rector’s List Award for her consistent and exceptional academic achievements. But the road to achieving both was not easy, according to her.

Previously, she had obtained her Diploma in Early Childhood Education from the International Islamic College (IIC) and was looking forward to furthering her degree in the same field but was instead offered an Information Technology programme in KICT.

“It was really hard for me during my first year since I had no experience at all in programming compared to other students,” she explained. “I had applied for Change of Programme (COP) twice, but my requests were rejected. In the end, I decided to accept my fate and push through the degree.”

When comparing education with ICT, the differences were striking. One must wonder how one can adjust to a completely different course. Despite many tears shed and having to learn from scratch, ‘Iffah’s perseverance in overcoming her struggles during her early years in the IIUM eventually paid off.

She also managed to receive the Gold Award for overall best Final Year Project (FYP) in systems development. She decided to take the opportunity to thank her fellow FYP partner Mutaz S. M. Harara for being a great and supportive partner.

Amidst the trials and tribulations, she mentioned her parents, fiancée, roommates, fellow INSPIRE club members, and last but not least, KICT lecturers Dr. Akeem Olowolayemo, Dr. Hafizah Mansor and Dr. Suriani Sulaiman as her beacons of support. Their collective support was crucial in turning obstacles into stepping stones in her academic journey, and she conveyed her gratitude to them for their guidance and motivation.

Towards the end of her interview with IIUM Today, she also shared valuable advice and lessons with students currently struggling in their studies.

“Nothing is impossible. You might think you can’t do it but in reality you definitely can. Sometimes, getting out of your comfort zone is the way to push forward to discover new strengths and unlock a realm of exciting possibilities.” ***
