GOMBAK, 9 March 2025: The entire community of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) today expressed deep sorrow and grief over the passing of the renowned Islamic thinker and scholar, Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas.
The late scholar, widely recognised as one of the most influential contemporary Islamic intellectuals in the world, leaves behind a profound intellectual legacy, particularly in the fields of philosophy, education, theology, and Malay-Islamic civilisation.
Among his most significant contributions to the university and the academic world was the establishment of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC). Under his vision, ISTAC developed into an international centre of excellence that champions the decolonisation of knowledge and the empowerment of Islamic civilisation through a refined intellectual framework.
Hence, his passing is a great loss to the academic and Muslim community, but his ideas and contributions will continue to inspire future generations.***
