On a balmy Friday evening of 16th June 2023, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) campus came alive with intellectual fervor as TEDx IIUM 2023 was held back to back with IIUM’s 40th anniversary with the theme “A Journey, Not a Destination”. This thought-provoking event aimed to challenge conventional notions of success and inspire attendees to cherish the present moment while striving for personal growth and continuous learning.
The event aimed to inspire individuals to find joy and meaning in their journey rather than being solely focused on reaching a specific destination. In his opening remarks, Br. Hashem Abdulwali, the programme manager of TEDx IIUM 2023, emphasized the value of deriving joy and meaning from the journey itself, rather than fixating on reaching the endpoint. It was a refreshing departure from the rat race mentality that often permeates society, urging individuals to appreciate the process of growth and discovery in every aspect of life.
TEDx IIUM 2023 was not just a gathering of accomplished individuals, but a celebration of unity and collaboration. Jointly organized by the InUnity Club, The Good Society Club, and the Alumni Relations Division (ARD), the event showcased the power of bringing together diverse perspectives to create a more inclusive and compassionate society.
Among the illustrious speakers, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman shared his inspiring journey from the IIUM to politics and policy-making. He emphasized the significance of work-life integration and the importance of building a sustainable internal system that keeps one going during low points. His words resonated with the audience, serving as a reminder that passion alone may not sustain success, but a well-crafted system can.
Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, the former Pahang Menteri Besar, brought attention to the pivotal role of families as the bedrock of peaceful and prosperous societies. His speech echoed the timeless truth that nurturing strong family bonds can contribute to building a harmonious world.
Adding a youthful and energetic perspective, Ayana Jihye Moon, an IIUM Political Science student, entrepreneur, and celebrity, urged the audience to break free from conventional societal norms and embrace their true potential. Her call to maximise possibilities and potentials was a reminder to embrace individuality and explore paths less travelled.
The event also showcased the intellectual prowess of IIUM’s own faculty members. Dr. Nurul Nuha Abdul Molok from the Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT) addressed the concerning issue of cyberbullying and presented valuable online safety tips. This highlighted the university’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges and promoting a safer digital environment.
Dr. Ahmad Jazlan Haja Mohideen, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, presented a captivating discussion on the potential of 4D printing in advancing the medical field. Drawing inspiration from nature’s adaptability, he emphasized the transformative power of biomimicry, a testament to how the wonders of nature can help solve the most complex problems.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship by Wardah Beauty, Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), Friends of Palestine (FoP), and Soft Cremez, the event was made possible reflecting the commitment of the private sector in supporting intellectual pursuits and community enrichment.
As the sun set on TEDx IIUM 2023, the echoes of powerful ideas and inspirational journeys lingered in the hearts and minds of attendees. It was a reminder that life’s true essence lies not in reaching a destination but in embracing the beauty and growth of the journey. This event served as a catalyst for a mindset shift, igniting a fire within every individual to strive for personal excellence, cherishing each moment as they carve their path towards a brighter tomorrow.***
