GOMBAK, 17 May 2023: Today, students gathered for the first dialogue of the IIUMSU Election 2023 between the Office of Welfare and Office of Education in front of an audience. The main goal was for voters to get to know the two candidates for the election better.Â
The two candidates are Political Science student, Br. Ali Karimi Bin Mohd Nasri for the office of Welfare and Economics student, Br. Muhammad Nadzmi Wajdi Bin Yushadi for the office of Education. The dialogue was moderated by Sr. Kutsar binti S. Anuar @Shaiful Anuar.Â
According to Br. Nadzmi, œEducation is close to my heart because my mother and grandmother were both teachers, he added that education is powerful because it can change an ordinary person to becoming an extraordinary one.Â
He mentioned that there has been a decrease in intellectual discourse activities in the IIUM especially after the pandemic and he intends to address the matter in order to revive them.Â
When asked about the internal issues within the university, Br. Nadzmi also mentioned that they are recurring issues and everyone needs to sit down and have discussions on them in order to solve them.Â
He clarified that improving the intellectual discourse is collective work and he intends to conduct monthly discussions and presentations in the Speaker’s Corner to stimulate this intellectual discourse.Â
“The students should trust me as I have strong idealism and a big heart and I believe these qualities are the most valuable capital needed to hold this position,” he concluded.
Br. Ali on the other hand shared, œI want to start initiatives that can improve the students’ welfare even after my tenureship and I want to do it efficiently.
He added that he wants to make students with disabilities as well international students feel more included by prioritizing the needy for aids like food banks.
When asked on if he can reach the government and raise the issues of the high cost of living to officials, he mentioned that before reaching the government he intends to cater to students’ problems within the university first.
Br. Ali clarified that the careline project initiated in the previous tenure only assigned their officers to listen to students’ problems as they are not qualified to advise students and he intends to collaborate with Counseling and Psychology students to further improve this initiative.
“I have the passion and ideas needed to hold this position and the students should trust me as I will be one of the leaders in the union,” he concluded.
