GOMBAK, 18 August 2022: Shameem Rumaisaa binti Wan Suhaimi, a graduate of Bachelor of History and Civilization (HIST) enlightened the audience of the importance of history in a civilization during her valedictorian speech at the 37th IIUM Convocation Ceremony yesterday (17 August 2022)

In today’s world, people tend to view the development of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as the key features of an advanced civilization while the study of human sciences often seen irrelevant.

Whenever she mentioned to others that she’s majoring in history, often times she would receive questions on her future job prospects.

She explained that the classification of knowledge implemented in our society is based on the western secular classification where the subject matter is to attain material wealth.

“Since the subject matter of history does not lead to the attainment of material gains, they are perceived insignificant and unpopular,” Shameem Rumaisaa said.

She added that if knowledge were to be seen or valued through the lens of the Islamic worldview, the stigma would not be an issue as it is viewed based on the needs of individuals or communities.

Shameem Rumaisaa believed that it is the responsibility of history graduates to share their knowledge to remind others of the significance of history, without which we’ll not be able to learn a proper lesson.

In moments of confusion and doubts, she mentioned how her parents helped her overcome problems by giving wise advice and assurances.

“My parents never stopped believing in me even when I doubted myself, and even as I continue my master’s degree, I’m reassured that I’ll continue to have their relentless support,” she told the audience.

To her lecturers, she thanked them all for their tireless efforts in educating her and her fellow coursemates.

“The perseverance we demonstrate is proof that we are capable of overcoming any trials and tribulations. By maintaining this and utilising the knowledge that we have gained, I believe we are capable of serving the people and participating in rebuilding the nation in the post-pandemic world,” she concluded.***
