GOMBAK, 18 August 2022: Hayyu Sayyidah Binti Mohamed, who graduated from AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (AHAS KIRKHS), did not expect to be placed on the Rector’s List for the 37th IIUM Convocation.

Minoring in English Language and Literature did not stop Hayyu from being an excellent student in her Sociology major, which made her grateful to be on the Rector’s List.

Hayyu admitted she faced a difficult moment minoring in the English Language as she was not proficient in the language. However, she felt relieved completing the tough subjects with the help of friends from the course.

“I struggled to understand some subjects and I cried a few times. But, Alhamdulillah I managed to complete the tough subjects with the help of my friends from BENL.”

Despite her tight schedule as the Assistant President of the Secretariat of Sociology & Anthropology (SOCASA), she was always trying to prioritize her studies as it is the main reason to be at IIUM.

“I believe we have to give the best. So, when meetings or programmes ended in the late evenings, I always push myself to stay up to finish my assignments,” she added.

In sharing tips for achieving good grades, Hayyu said, “Students should never be shy to ask lecturers questions as they are always there to answer and help them. I always ask for the books or any reference materials that the lecturers used.”

She also pointed out that extra reading before and after a class helped her to understand the subject better than attending class without preparation.

Currently pursuing a postgraduate programme in sustainability, Hayyu hoped she will be able to help society by empowering the environment.***
