GOMBAK, 25 May 2022: What matters most to him is that students get the the basic needs, hence, running for the seat is the right way for him to make a positive contribution, said Mohammad Rafiq Shahmie, who won uncontested the seat for Vice President I in the IIUM Student Union Election 2022.

A fourth-year student from Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences (KENMS), Rafiq Shahmie has been enthusiastic in the student movement since joining the university in his first year.

That included his involvement as a Vice President I of the Economics and Management Sciences Society (ECONSS) 2020/2021, as Chairperson of the Bachelor of Council 2019/2020, representing IIUM as KPMG ambassador, as well as representing Malaysia as Delegate for ASEAN University Student Council Union.

For this tenure, he said, he has a strong devotion to fulfil students’ needs covering welfare and academic matters.

œTo achieve all that, we need strong and healthy finances for our union, he added.

Focusing on sustaining the financial development of the student union, Rafiq emphasised that his manifesto comprises three stages; the early stage, the middle stage, and the late stage.

He said the first stage is to carry out pilot tests on a few financial fronts such as vending machines, stalls or a basic shop. The second stage is to develop more complicated businesses, while the last stage is to hold big assets for the student union.

He emphasised that all these plans have been segmented carefully and he hoped that they can be properly executed.

Asked how he defined good leadership, Rafiq said, œA good leader is someone who can manage, administer and deliver impactful solutions.

Considering himself as an agent of change, he expressed the hope that his experiences so far would benefit the student union and everyone. ***
