IIUM team wins Environmental Debate Competition

GOMBAK, 22 August 2021: Congratulations to the IIUM debate team for winning the Environmental Debate Competition recently.

Organised by Majlis Debat Universiti Malaysia (MADUM), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and Department of Environment together with the Ministry of Higher Education, the competition was aimed at increasing awareness of the environment and hone the debating skills among students of Institutions of Higher Learning or Institut Pengajian Tinggi (IPT).

The IIUM debate team comprised of Anis Afina, Muhammad Ilham, Muhammad Wafi, Muhammad Aniq and Hazim Zusaini, managed to outshine their opponent from UiTM in the finals where they debated on the matter of developing nation in recovering the ecosystem.

The finals of the debate competition also saw Muhammad Ilham from IIUM taking the best final debater award while Muhammad Amirul from Universiti Malaya took home the best league debater award.

The finals also marked the closing ceremony of the competition which was concluded with a speech by the Secretary, General, Ministry of Environment and Water, Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Bin Ujang.

“I hope with hosting this debate competition, future generations who care about the environment can be born. The roles played by IPT itself helped the government a lot in addressing environmental issues,” he said.

The competition, which is the oldest debate competition among IPT students in Malaysia, was held for the 27th time from 14 to 17 August. The finals was held on 21 August in conjunction with the National Environment Day which is held on the same day every year.
