PETALING JAYA, 18 April 2020: “What matters more is willingness rather than knowledge on technical aspects, said Mr. Tan Der Jiun, the speaker for CIMB career talk that was virtually held on Thursday (16 April).
Mr. Tan, a graduate from University of Nottingham and also an alumnus from The Complete Banker (TCB) batch 31, is now serving in group treasury and market.
He gave a talk on the topic œThe CIMB Journey on how and what brought him to be working with CIMB for seven years and counting.
Giving an insight into working in the bank, Mr. Tan said it does not only mean you have to deal with credit cards and housing loans but it also means an exposure to other departments as well.
Since he is entrusted mostly with trader position, Mr. Tan shared five key points as a trader. if you intend to work as a trader in the future, the following tips would be useful to keep in mind are:
1. Stay hungry for job
After you graduate, your passion for your work for the first two or three years will be at its best. I want to do this, I want to do that but it will not be the same after five years and more. Here you need to know what keeps you going and how to motivate yourself to overcome a bad day and a boring day.
2. Continuous learning/receptive to change
Route on trading is different from others. Trading from five years back is not the same as the current trading. You need to always stay eager to learn.
3. Positive attitude
It is practicable when you have a bad day at work. The worst thing could happen for a trader is you could lose money or you are not making money. It can be very depressing because it can cause stress but you must keep a positive mind and do the right thing.
4. Discipline
Working with a bank as a trader, you would be given a certain target market and expected amount of money that you need to make. Sometimes there is a time when the market is not going into your way and you need to make a decision on what to do. Discipline is needed for you to see the pattern of the market.
5. Integrity
The most important structure when you work with a bank is integrity.
In addition, Mr Tan also shares three things to do when you are interested in the field:
1. Speak to more people
Connect to more people via Linkedin, mutual connection and others to know more about banking and which area of the bank you think will suit you better.
2. Ask questions
To yourself, what and why you want this job? It is very important to know. Know the perks and your interest in the job.
To others, what is the worst day of your career like? Do you need to work until midnight? Get the insight of the job that you want to really know if you are fit for the job.
3. Apply to CIMB
CIMB always open their platform to get a passionate and interested candidate to be employed.
Mr. Tan also urged graduates not to worry if they are not good at a certain parts of the banking industry.
œDuring my working experience, I lacked in a few technical things in the banking industry and I managed to go through with it as CIMB provided the opportunity for me to learn, he added.
œEven if you are not in the economics or banking courses in your study, you can also join CIMB or banking industry as long as you have an interest and a passion in it, he told the audience.
The career talk ended with a Q & A session from the audience.
