Exhibition on drug abuse to create greater public awareness

GOMBAK, 3 December 2018: A special exhibition on drug abuse held at HS Square in campus here today was intended to create greater awareness of drug abuse among the students.

Organised by the Department of Psychology, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, and supervised by Dr. Intan Aidura, the event started from 12.00 noon and ended at 4:00 p.m.

According to Izzy Seraz, a member of this programme, the project was divided into four different sections, which are medical, psychological, prevention and treatment.

Izzy Seraz explained that for medical section, there are different types of drugs such as depressants, hallucinogens, dissociative and stimulants. She said that it each has its own set of effects and risks.

Meanwhile, another participant, Kamaran Mohammed Hassan, conducted the talk from psychological point of view to explain why the drug abuse phenomenon had occurred warning IIUM students on the danger.

The prevention section provided four models for drug abuse prevention to educate students that drug addiction is preventable.

Izzy Seraz pointed out that the main objective of this programme was to provide information on drug abuse and to create awareness among IIUM students. “The idea is to encourage students to stay away from drugs and have a healthy lifestyle,” she stressed. ***
