MENTION 2019, a good exposure on research issues

By Nor Shafiqizni Yuhani

For the first time in my life, I was given the opportunity to present our research methodology project paper entitled œFactors Influencing Usage of Zero Single-Use Plastic by IIUM Community at the International MENTION 2019 Conference. This was despite the fact that the conference aimed at contributing significant discussions and ideas on issues affecting global media and education landscape.

Even though the conference had gathered current research from academics, media practitioners, industry players and post graduate students, we, the undergraduate students, were given the chance to share our findings on themes of new arising issues such as globalisation and social effects; media, democracy and integration; communication policy and industry; audience analysis; and media security.

The experience will continue to linger forever in my mind for I had the chance to meet not only local scholars but also international scholars from New Zealand and Indonesia.

The keynote speaker had enlightened us with a lot of information. Not to forget the plenary session by our former Rector, Professor Dr. Syed Arabi Idid, Tan Sri (Dr.) Johan Jaafar, the former Chairman of Media Prima Berhad, and Suhaimi Sulaiman from Astro AWANI.

A paper entitled œThe Mediating Effect of Attitude on e-Wallet Usage among Malaysians written by Hasnah Abdul Kadir, Prof. Dr. Saodah Wok and Dr. Rizalawati Ismail from IIUM received best award given to top five papers for the Conference.

Prof. Dr. Saodah Wok of IIUM’s Department of Communication received special award for being a very supportive participant as she had been attending MENTION as early as 1979 during which she presented her masters thesis result until the 16th Biennial Conference recently held from 19 to 21 November.

All the papers have been published in MENTION 2019 Proceeding (ASBN 978-983-9391-72-5).

The experience was very memorable for me as I have developed networking with students from other universities in sharing knowledge and experiences.

It is indeed a good exposure for students to develop their research skills and increase their knowledge. As such, I would encourage students to participate and take every opportunity such as this in the future.***
