GOMBAK, 14 October 2017 – The Department of Communication, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS), will have an opportunity to work closely with the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) to further enhance its curriculum and academic programme in future, following the appointment of its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Datuk Abdul Jalil Hamid, as Adjunct Professor at the Department in September this year.
Datuk Abdul Jalil will be sharing his wealth of experience and expertise in journalism with the Department, aimed at connecting the academics with the media industry and exposing the younger generation of students to the fast changing technology.
In a briefing session to the academic team led by Head of the Department of Communication, Dr. Aini Maznina Ab Manaf, at NSTP office in Bangsar yesterday, Datuk Abdul Jalil said the students will be exposed to all types of media activities operating under Media Prima Berhad such as radio and television besides newspapers.
“It is timely to introduce students to the digitised news delivery as opposed to the traditional print version to prepare them for careers in a field that has been changing so rapidly as a consequence of new kinds of communication technology,” Datuk Abdul Jalil said.
Datuk Abdul Jalil will assist Communication Department to incorporate his years of invaluable experience in journalism to help strengthen the existing curriculum and discuss how NSTP could contribute to benefit the students.
According to Dr. Aini, an official meeting between Datuk Abdul Jalil and the Department of Communication has been scheduled next month in IIUM campus to strategically plan for future line-up of programmes to benefit Communication students.
Present at the briefing session with the CEO of NSTP yesterday was Prof. Datuk Sri Dr. Syed Arabi Idid, a senior professor at the Department of Communication and former rector of IIUM.
Datuk Abdul Jalil’s appointment as Adjunct Professor at the Department of Communication is for one-year period commencing September this year.
As CEO of NSTP, Datuk Abdul Jalil is on a mission to improve the company’s performance to maintain Media Prima’s long term growth strategies. Before his current appointment, Datuk Abdul Jalil had served as Group Managing Editor of NSTP from October 15, 2011 until March 1, 2017.
He has more than 25 years of experience as a journalist having served as foreign correspondent and deputy bureau chief with global news company, Reuters, for 18 years. He also held chief political correspondent and deputy bureau chief positions for Reuters in Malaysia and Brunei between 1998 to 2008.
Datuk Abdul Jalil also served BERNAMA for seven years as acting economic news editor and Johor bureau chief. He graduated in Mass Communication from UiTM in 1982. ***
