“Check with source to avoid spreading fake news”: AMAD’s Director

By Marsha Adibah

GOMBAK, 8 August 2017: Last Friday (4 August), a  number of communication students were caught by surprise when they saw a notice that went viral on the announcement that the Human Sciences programmes, specifically mentioning Communication major, will be moved from Gombak campus to Pagoh in Johor.

IIUMToday immediately checked with the Academic Management and Admission Division (AMAD) to find out if this was true and its director, Associate Professor Dr. Gairuzazmi Mat Ghani, retorted saying, “AMAD never made any statement on the matter. Obviously, the notice was fake and only the Kulliyyah of Language and Management will move to Pagoh campus this upcoming semester.”

Dr. Gairuzazmi stated, “This is not supposed to happen as it’s troublesome for various parties. We had to answer to many questions and calls from those affected by this fake announcement.”

Asked about his thought on such fake news being spread around to members of IIUM community, and how AMAD handled this situation, the director said, “There have been a lot of fake news being reported recently, and I understand it’s extremely difficult for readers to know if such a report is genuine.”

“The best way to check if you have doubts on news of this nature is to refer the matter to the official IIUM website. There has been no notice on the transfer of Communication Department or the Human Sciences programmes made on the website,” he clarified.***
