KIRKHS retracts notification letter and offers apology

GOMBAK, 11 July 2017: The Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS) will retract the notification on pre-registration for Semester 1, 2017/2018 session posted on its Facebook and issue an apology, its Dean, Prof. Dr. Rahmah Binti Ahmad H. Osman, told IIUMToday. Instead, the Kulliyyah will encourage students to register their subjects during the scheduled time made available.

This followed a meeting between the Kulliyyah and the student bodies held yesterday (10 July) which was attended by Prof. Dr. Rahmah Binti Ahmad H. Osman along with the Deputy Dean (Student Affairs), Dr. Muhammad Fuzi Omar, Senior Deputy Director of Dean’s office, Hamdan Adnan, Senior Assistant Director of Office of Academic Affairs, Rafidah Mat Desa, and Assistant Administrative Officer of Office of Academic Affairs, Shamsul Bin Paris. Representing the student bodies were the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences Students’ Societies (IRKHSSS) and the Secretariats.

The academic office of KIRKHS had posted on their Facebook page (@ddaakirkhs) on 6 July a notification on STATUS AFTER PRE-REGISTRATION FOR SEMESTER 1, 2017/2018 along with the list of students who have failed to pre-register their courses for the semester. The post had caught the attention of the students, particularly those who were affected by the announcement, and many were outraged by the fine of RM100 to be imposed by the Kulliyyah on those who failed to register.

However, there seemed to be a misunderstanding regarding the letter issued on the Facebook. The RM100 penalty will only be imposed on the students who register their subject during the adjustment period and not during the pre-registration and add-drop periods.

The pre-registration had been conducted earlier from 18 April until 10 May 2017. The add-drop period will be conducted on 7 to 10 September 2017. Those who failed to utilise both periods of time, will be issued with RM100 fine. It is recorded that more than 1,000 students have failed to register their subject during the pre-registration period.

Puan Rafidah said, “The letter is intended to inform students who missed the first pre-registration period, to register their courses during the add-drop period.”

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Rahmah said, “We will not charge any money on our students unless they failed to register the subject during the pre-registration period and the add-drop period.”

For graduating students whose name have been listed, they are those who haven’t registered their i-Grad application. Students, especially those in the fourth year, are encouraged to fill in i-Grad application for Academic Management and Admission Division (AMAD) to endorse them as graduating students.

“It is encouraged for the fourth year students to fill in the i-Grad applications, and AMAD will endorse the name of graduating students,” Puan Rafidah said.

Aina Wafi, representing the Islamic Revealed Knowledge Students’ Society (ISRAK), suggested for the university to revoke the policy as “the system is still not in place, following that, most of the students are having difficulties to register because of sections closed and not enough sections offered”.

According to Prof. Dr. Rahmah, the Kulliyyah is trying its best to make sure the number of sections offered are adequate with the number of students who are taking the subject. One of the solutions right now, she said, is by recruiting more academic staff.

“We realised that we have a shortage of staff and because of that we are currently recruiting more academic staff,” Prof. Dr. Rahmah said.

“By adding more academic staff, hopefully it could help open more sections for the students to register, and this would solve the problem.”

Students who still face problems with their course registration have been advised to refer to the Kulliyyah. ***
