Cooperation from campus community needed to ensure safety

By Qistina Kamal

In recent semesters, there seems to be an increase in theft cases at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The latest case which happened just last week was at one of the students Mahallah. Most of the victims reported that they have lost shoes, clothes, laptops, mobile phones and even motorcycles. Even though IIUM is highly regarded as a university with an Islamic environment and high Islamic values throughout the university community, this does not prevent the perpetrators to commit such shameful acts.

Thus, the proper measures should be taken, enforced and practised among the university community members. One of the ways is, the students should lock their room door every time leaving the room even for short periods and going to the bathroom. This disables the chance for any potential perpetrators to commit the crime of stealing.

Besides that, the students should ensure that their room windows and curtains should be closed at all times. This prevents the potential perpetrators who might be monitoring their targets activities to plan and act on their theft crime. Next, the university community should immediately report any suspicious individuals to the campus security or any relevant authorities. For example, there had been cases where male outsiders were seen roaming about the female Mahallah and some of the female students laptops and mobile phones were found stolen the next day.

In brief, cooperation and effort from all members of the university community is needed to ensure the safety of everyone and to prevent future theft cases. ***
