No exemption for the corrupt

THE Federal Court ruling on the corruption case of former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo offers hope that the big fish are no longer untouchable. In dismissing Dr Khirs appeal against the one-year jail sentence meted out by the Shah Alam High Court in 2011, Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin ruled that œcorruption in all manner and form cannot be condoned. A fine would not send that message. Neither would community service. This comes as welcome news for Malaysians, who are used to only hearing about convictions involving lower-ranking officials and ordinary people. Dr Khir had appealed against his conviction of using his position as menteri besar to acquire properties ” two plots of land and a house in Section 7, Shah Alam ” worth RM6.5 million, for RM3.5 million from Ditamas Sdn Bhd through its director, Shamsuddin Hayroni.
