THEIR numbers will double by 2020. As of the end of last year, there were already as many as 100,000 of them; foreigners registered as students in our country. In a short five years, if the target is reached, there will be 200,000 foreign students studying in Malaysias institutions of higher learning (IHL). Already, as a preferred study destination, Malaysia is ranked 11th internationally, and accounts for two per cent of the total international student population. What this amounts to is the success of policy implemented over two decades ago to turn this country into a centre of educational excellence. Granted, the IHLs have yet to deserve mention in the most salubrious world listings of top educational establishments, but such established institutions, such as University Malaya, have had some success.
