Giving kitchen waste its due

YESTERDAY, the mandatory domestic waste separation system began in several states. The homes affected are in Perlis, Kedah, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor, and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. However, residents will have until June next year to get into the habit of separating their kitchen waste from their recyclables and garden refuse. Rubbish collection will take on the 2+1 system: two days a week for kitchen waste, and one day each for recyclables and garden refuse. The aim is to, firstly, reduce the sizeable production of solid waste making its way to landfills. Secondly, it is to reuse recyclables, including waste from the garden, such as leaves, plants and grass cuttings, which can be converted into compost. In short, the goal is to green the way waste is managed and cultivate a culture of sustainability. And, last but not least, it is to cut the cost of solid waste management.
