BORDER security on the Malaysian frontier with its neighbours must be improved to end smuggling and human-trafficking activities. Needless to say, there is an immediate need for the government to crack down on corruption among border security officers of the various agencies that contribute to the overall integrity of the countrys safety. For this is the most damning weak link that has the potential to completely disrupt the inviolability of the countrys territorial sovereignty. That armed criminals have become customary rather than strange suggests that firearms are being smuggled in and the Malaysian-Thai border, by all accounts, is so porous it is amazing that worse things do not happen, like the Lahad Datu incursion, for instance. Instead, here crime is the primary motivating factor for the corruptor and not politics. Given the insurgency in southern Thailand, however, who is to say when that might spill over if Malaysia remains complacent.
