VERY few people will deny that globalisation has many benefits. Citizens of a globalised world, being used to multiculturalism, are less insular, more open-minded, tolerant, competitive and resilient. But it is also undeniable that with all that movement across borders, not everything that comes is positive. Epidemics, including Ebola that jumped out of Africa last year, highlight how truly interconnected we are and the threat of contagion through porous borders. Here in Malaysia, unfamiliar diseases are becoming common, and diseases that we have congratulated ourselves on having eradicated are coming back, with new strains to which our citizens have not been immunised. This health threat is, in part, attributable to the large influx of immigrants to this country.
