KICT students win I-Innova ˜14 competition

NILAI, 6 December 2014: Four IIUM students recently won Islamic Innovation Competition 2014 (I-Innova ˜14) at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) for their Final Year Project products.

The students were challenged to create and promote the application based on Islamic features. There were two teams, Maizatul Ain and Amira Tahir also from another group, Ummul Fazila and Asyeila Johari. All of them from Kulliyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT) were named the grand prize (Gold Medal) and Bronze Medal winners respectively in the undergraduate (UG) category.

Under the supervision of Dr. Sofianiza Abd Malik , both teams felt honoured and grateful for the critical support and encouragement by lecturers, family and friends and of course their struggle and hard work to complete the project.

Before being selected to the competition, there were five teams under the same supervisor but only two have been picked as the participants to USIM competition.

Within 15 minutes period of presentation, they captivated and impressed the three-panel judges.The basis of their project focused on the Autism kids who are in special needs to struggle with speech issues , expressing their needs and sensory processing.

This free-android application , œAsyraf dan Adab is a 3D animation software designed specifically for Muslim kids with autism to teach kids on how to learn the adab in Islam such as dua. Interestingly, this app is the first in Malay version to easily adapt with native speakers in Malaysia.

The animation also places great emphasis on the daily interactions in Islamic manners and moral education. Autistic like-traits will be able to listen to the word phonetically through animation from this app.

œI hope with this achievement, we can inspire our juniors and boost students performance to do well in their FYP for the upcoming semester and never give up to produce and develop creative products, said Fazila the Bronze medal holder representing Adab dan Asyraf 2.

Asked about their hope and future plans, Maizatul, the Gold medal holder who worked on Adab dan Asyraf 5 said , œWe hope that there will be more applications for people with disabilities. We would love to contribute as much as we can for the ummah and in future we want to build the iOS version for this app.”

The I-Innova14 themed “Commercialisation of Innovation for Ummah Well-Being” was aimed at encouraging innovations, produced by local and international research institutes in their contribution to the development of the Muslims.
