Reset your mind to achieve your goals for new semester

By Izzud deen Redzuan

Beginning another semester is an incredible way to change your approaches to classes, individual life, and extracurricular activities, and also to reevaluate your objectives, so you would come up with new approaches to achieve your goals.

However in most cases, the beginning of the new semester holds much more promises than what you really achieved at the end. Many promises are thrown in but at the end of the semester you probably would achieve only 20% of the goals you have set. This is bound to happen if you are not serious of what you want to achieve and not working hard enough at it.

Consider this one example which might happen to any student. First day at class will be like , “I will get A for this subject. I’m positive”. After midterm test, “The result isn’t very promising. I probably get B”. Then when the carry mark is coming out from the closet, suddenly, “I shall pass this subject. A pass is good enough.”

The fact is that regardless of whether its your last semester in IIUM (time flies doesnt it?) or your first (welcome juniors!), you should persevere to make this one a semester to remember.

For Khairul Akhtar, a second-year Political Science major, he wants to be more efficient in time management, discipline in submitting assignments on time, and give greater appreciation to the lessons hes going to learn this semester.

As a new student, Sheril Atiqah aspires to have an improved personality and to do well academically. She is also looking forward to join extracurricular activities so she can learn more about time management. She is a first-year Bahasa Melayu for International Communication major.

Ainil Izyan is a second-year Arabic International Communication major who is currently pursuing her studies at University of Nizwa, Oman as exchange student from IIUM. Her ultimate goal, she said, is to score the Deans List this semester as ‘souvenir’ from Oman for her beloved family and friends.

Second-year student from Kulliyyah of Education, Fahmi Kashfi said that he has set two main goals for this semester. He wants to bring up his CGPA and implement what he has learned in the classroom to the outside activities. Secondly, he hoped not to miss all the activities organized by Buku Jalanan, Uni Massa, Maruf Pena and others.

Abdullah from Kulliyyah of Engineering said that he would like to score as many As as possible this semester and get involved more in co-curricular activities.

œI shouldnt treat study just for the exams as habit and embrace difficulties in study, he continued.

As for me, my goal is to make sure that I truly understand what Im studying although it would take hours to understand the subject. And I would like to spend more quality time with friends to make this the best semester. Avoiding procrastination is also my goal so that I would pay extra attention to complete my assignments on time. I will also make more efforts to sit in the first row in classrooms during lectures. More focus, less distraction, and no phone!
