Food festivals are usually thought of as a place to spend time with loved ones and enjoy delicious food. But there is more to the upcoming Gombak Food Festival 4.0 than just food. Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti Kamii or the Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre in Gombak Setia, PPDK KAMII supports persons with disabilities, and is one of the participating booths at GFF4.0.

Beyond providing care, PPDK KAMII, empowers special individuals through education, guidance and practical skill development. The public can witness how inclusive community development can have a significant social impact thanks to their involvement in this event.

PPDK KAMII upgrades the children’s skills in daily life, social interactions and for work. Hands-on training is one of the key approaches used and trainees learn to make simple food items and hand-made crafts to sell to the public. At the Gombak Food Festival 4.0, visitors can see and purchase products such as traditional snacks and handmade items prepared by the students with disabilities. These products are not just for sale but are products of their training process.

The World Health Organisation described a community rehabilitation goal as, “to maximize independence and social participation among persons with disabilities.” This is indicative of how PPDK KAMII combines learning, work experience and community involvement in its programmes.

PPDK KAMII is meaningful because of the human story behind each product. Each item is a testament to the effort, learning and growth felt by the students. The trainers patiently help the participants to build their confidence step by step.

Families often say they are emotionally satisfied when they see progress in their loved ones. “We didn’t expect to see such a change in skills and confidence in such a short amount of time,” one caregiver said. It shows how the programme has had a positive impact not just on the individual but also on their families.

Visitors don’t just buy products at the food festival; they see real stories of growth and adaptability.

All GFF4.0 booths offer good food with an income-generating focus.

Food with a purpose means that every purchase made from PDK KAMII helps support a program that empowers people with disabilities through the building of skills and training. Consumers are more likely to support socially responsible products, mentioned Qazzafi.

This goal of the centre is to also promote a community scope, sparking the public to easily and better support more inclusive initiatives.

With time, programs aimed at treating disabilities through a social framework, such as PPDK KAMII, end up achieving the goal of enhancing individual social participation. The United Nations acknowledges that social integration programs are instrumental in ensuring equal opportunities. For Sharma and Das, their study found that community-based rehabilitation has been proven effective in promoting inclusion.

A staff member once commented on the work of PPDK Kamii, saying, “Every product sold here represents an important step towards someone’s independence.” This is the most important impact behind the crafts on sale at the festival. Real social consequences improve the confidence of families and the community.

GFF4.0 visitors are invited to stop by the PPDK Kamii booth to support their products and learn more about their mission. Each purchase you make goes directly to support the development and training of the participants.

Supporting PPDK KAMII does not only mean buying food or handicrafts, but it also means allowing lives and opening opportunities for those who are worthy of equal opportunities in society.

“Everything you buy here helps someone gain confidence, and a better future,” said one supporter.

When visitors attend GFF4.0 and decide to support PPDK KAMII, they become part of a meaningful movement towards inclusion, care and community empowerment.***
