GOMBAK, 9 December 2025: A standout graduate from 41st IIUM Convocation Ceremony, Nur Affisa Emalin Binti Mohd Roshanaffi, was recognised as one of the Best Students (Overall) of the Kulliyyah of Medicine (KOM) for her outstanding academic performance and commitment to co-curricular excellence.
She was also named Best Student for three departments which are the Department of Community Medicine, the Department of Psychiatry, and the Department of Basic Medical Sciences. Not only that, she shared that last August, during IIUM Takrim, she received the Best Female Student for Community Engagement.
Reflecting on her learning experience as a medical student at IIUM, Nur Affisa described it as holistic as there is the integration between Science and Islamic values.
“The integration is not a bonus, it is a must to be able to apply the medical knowledge with our daily life as a Muslim” she said.
As a medical student, her learning style differed greatly from many other courses. Beginning in her third year, she transitioned into a clinical-based type of learning. Much of her study took place in hospitals, where she needed to join ward rounds, attend OT sessions, observe and assist in procedures, and meet with patients.
“I think that’s quite different for us because it doesn’t test you mentally, but it tests you physically as well”, she added.
Not only working hard for academics, Nur Affisa was also active in co-curricular activities. She served as Vice President 1 for Medical Students’ Society, Head of the Education and Training Bureau for Mahallah Representative Committee, and was also involved in community engagement programmes, including medical check-up health promotion.
“To balance between academic and co-curriculum activities is very hard, but with the doa’ and inspiration from my parents, and endless support from them, I manage to get through that. And my lecturers as well”, she said.
She also shared her favourite hadith of Rasulullah SAW: “The best human is the most beneficial to all mankind”. She believes, other than academics, we need to be the most beneficial in any area and any aspect in our life.
Giving advice and practical study tips, she emphasised the importance of self-awareness. She encouraged students to know their strengths, weaknesses, and goals.
“Once we know our strengths and weaknesses, we need to plan. Plan your study, plan your co-curricular activities, plan your free time and hobbies, and priorities according to the urgency of the matter.”
As her final message, Nur Affisa Emalin reminded students to always appreciate their parents and the people around them, acknowledging the crucial role of support systems in one’s academic journey.***
