In today’s era of globalization, national borders are no longer a barrier to the exchange of ideas, and education is the key to building bridges between nations. As a student, I believe that the future of ASEAN is not only built through intergovernmental diplomacy, but also through collaboration between universities und students. Therefore, the news about the recent bilateral meeting between the Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology and the Malaysian Embassy gives us great hope, especially for the younger generation who are hungry for change.
Cooperation that includes joint research in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy, and rare mineral management not only demonstrates scientific progress, but also trust. These two neighboring countries have not only signed a memorandum of understanding, but also built a bridge that connects the spirit of learning, cultural values, and a vision for a shared future.
As a student, I see this collaboration as a tangible manifestation of the ASEAN spirit, which means the spirit of growing together without national boundaries. Indonesia is now opening its doors wider to foreign students, especially those from ASEAN countries such as Malaysia. As stated by Minister Brian Yuliarto, Indonesia strives to become an inclusive and competitive destination for excellence in education. This is not only about education, but also about mutual understanding, respect, and enriching cross-cultural experiences.
From Malaysia’s perspective, Ambassador Dato Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin’s support for student exchanges demonstrates a forward-looking vision. Student exchanges not only strengthen academic cooperation but also foster greater interaction between the two societies, leading to a better understanding of each other’s cultures. When Malaysian students study in Indonesia or vice versa, they bring home more than just knowledge; they also bring a new understanding of the interconnectedness of ASEAN identities.
The most interesting aspect of this collaboration is the commitment to fund joint research between professors. This is an investment in the future that will produce real innovation for society and industry. By emulating the successful collaboration models with Australia and France, Indonesia and Malaysia now have the opportunity to become new centers of research and technology in Southeast Asia.
For me, this step is a symbol of the power of a “bridge of knowledge,” meaning that the bridge not only connects two countries, but also two hearts, two perspectives, and two generations that both want to contribute. In every scientific collaboration, inter-campus seminar, and joint research project, there is a moral message that we can learn, which is that learning together is the highest form of peace. This Indonesia-Malaysia collaboration is not the end, but the beginning of a long journey towards a stronger and smarter ASEAN. And I believe that every student involved in it, whether from Indonesia or Malaysia, is weaving the future, thread by thread, on the bridge of knowledge that we are building together.***
