Dyslexia Café: Where Food Heals and Stories are Served

By, Muhammad Fakhruddin bin Norankhairolhidzam and Muhammad Aiman Nasuha bin Amir

In the heart of Batu Caves, tucked within the calm stretch of Taman Selaseh, there is a café that is stirring more than just coffee. Dyslexia Café is not your typical restaurant. It is a warm, inclusive space built on grit, passion, and purpose. Here, your morning latte comes with a side of inspiration, and every plate tells a story of perseverance.

This extraordinary cafe was founded by Amer Adham Kamaruddin, a young chef with a big dream and dyslexia. Dyslexia, is a condition that robs a person of the ability to read or write. Imagine how deeply challenging life becomes when even words, the very tools of expression, feel like an unsolvable puzzle. With the unparalleled support of his mother, Nor Haslinda Mohd Hanafiah, Amer turned his learning disability into his strength. The love of a mother is such a blessing to have as it is his greatest strength, Amer penetrates all walls of hardship and obstacles in order to achieve his dream. A dream to build a legacy of food and service. Thus, Dyslexia Café was born not only to serve delicious food but also to spark conversations around dyslexia and learning challenges.

From Bangi to Batu Caves: A Café with a Mission

The legacy started in Bangi but the café found a new home in Batu Caves in early 2024, welcoming even more guests into its thoughtful and comforting atmosphere. But Amer’s mission goes beyond raising awareness, he employs individuals with dyslexia, offering them a supportive, judgment-free work environment. For those with dyslexia, finding a work environment where they are embraced like anyone else is nothing short of a blessing, it is a place where their challenges do not define them, but their strengths do. It is more than just a job, for them it is a chance to thrive in a world that often overlooks neurodiversity.

Step into Dyslexia Café, where the aroma alone feels like a warm embrace. Inviting aromas draw you in, but it is the beautiful interior that catches the eye and the heartfelt story behind it that gently holds your heart.

Dyslexia Café isn’t just a coffee shop, it’s a place where understanding and warmth are woven into every detail. The space, adorned in beautiful green and cream tones, feels like a gentle embrace. The soft green walls bring a sense of calm, while the warm cream accents create an atmosphere of effortless elegance. Founded by Amer, who understands the challenges of dyslexia firsthand, the café is designed to be a refuge where conversations flow easily.

More than just a place for coffee, Dyslexia Café is about connection and belonging. The team is not just about serving drinks; they share the message of resilience and acceptance. Whether you come in for a quiet moment, a heartfelt conversation, or just an excellent cup of coffee, you’ll leave with something more of a renewed sense of comfort and the quiet reassurance that everyone deserves to shine.

From the Chef’s Soul to Your Plate

The menu is a harmonious fusion of Malay, Chinese, and Western flavors, a way to display Amer’s boundless creativity. From hearty meals that ease an empty stomach, to cakes that indulge the sweetest cravings, and drinks that bring comfort in every sip. Dyslexia Café serves more than food; it serves warmth.

At Dyslexia Café, every dish tells a story, one of flavor, culture, and comfort. Signature favorites include the Juicy Sirloin Steak, served with a bold, peppery sauce that is beautifully placed on the plate, and handmade Dim Sum, that is very fine in textures and rich in tradition. The Daging Salai Masak Lemak Cili Padi brings spicy Malaysian kic. For something lighter, the Teriyaki Salmon with Soba Noodles is a beautifully balanced fusion of East and West.

Craving for more? The café also offers soul-satisfying plates like creamy Spaghetti Carbonara, Ayam Gepuk with its addictive crunch and spice, the spicy village feelings of Ayam Sambal Hijau, and the rich, golden indulgence of Ayam Buttermilk. To complete the experience, sip on fresh juices, soft drinks, or a comforting cup of hand-brewed coffee. Each drink is crafted to refresh and revive. Behind the kitchen door, Amer’s training as a pastier comes to life in his lineup of cakes, pastries, and desserts. All made by someone who has challenges but still chases his dream. Each dish is a mix of artistry and heart, served in a cozy, minimalist space with warm lighting and inclusive energy.

Specially Prepared for Gombak Food Fest!

Moreover, Dyslexia Café joined the Gombak Food Fest 2.0 from 3 to 4 June 2025 where you can taste special food from the cafe in a new environment. A chance to taste a masterpiece without traveling to its place of origin is a rare and magnificent privilege.
