Gombak, 23 November 2024: During the 8th session of the 40th IIUM Convocation Ceremony on 20 November 2024, at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Gombak, the Rector, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Osman Bakar, gave a speech emphasising the important role graduates will play in shaping the future. He mentioned that graduates are responsible in helping their communities, societies, and professions grow.

Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Osman reminded graduates to prepare for the challenges and opportunities of today’s world, such as rapid technology changes, artificial intelligence, economic inequality, and global tensions. He urged them to contribute as Muslims and global citizens, offering their support to their country and humanity.

The Rector also talked about the need for strong economic and healthcare systems based on a broad understanding of health. He warned that without these systems, society could face imbalances and problems. “Without these, we risk instability and social issues,” he said.

He highlighted the important roles of graduates from the two Kulliyyahs. Those from the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences are expected to promote fairness and justice for the well-being of society. Graduates from the Kulliyyah of Pharmacy have the responsibility to provide affordable medicine to help preserve health and ease suffering.

Both fields, he noted, share a common foundation in offering relief, comfort, and hope to those in need, underpinned by the principles of Khalifah—the Islamic concept of stewardship and responsibility as representatives of Allah on Earth.

Before concluding his speech, Prof. Emeritus Datuk Dr. Osman Bakar encouraged graduates to keep learning throughout their lives and use their knowledge to make a positive difference in the world.***
