GOMBAK, 17 November 2024: “They say that a PhD is not complete without a few tears,” said Dr. Ainul Ashiqin Ahmad Shuhaimi, who was conferred the Doctor of Philosophy in Built Environment from the Kuliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design in the 40th IIUM Convocation Ceremony, at IIUM Gombak on 16 November. In her speech which was full of emotion and warmth, she expressed her deepest appreciation to her supervisors and family, especially her mother for supporting her throughout her PhD research journey.

On a personal note, she fondly recalled her late father’s encouraging words that have motivated her to this day. “Your postgraduate studies are your own conviction, it is voluntary, for you, by you,” mentioned Dr. Ainul in her speech. It can be seen that her remarkable speech resonated deeply with fellow graduates who could relate to her story full of hurdles, making it a significant highlight of the ceremony.

Dr. Ainul credited much of her success to her supervisors, describing them as pillars of strength who guided her with wisdom and compassion. “My supervisors were incredibly supportive. Whenever I felt like giving up, they always pulled me back on my feet,” she said.

“There were many ups and downs, but the journey ended up being fulfilling for my personal growth,” she said in an interview with IIUMToday. Reflecting on her journey, Ainul emphasised the importance of having good niat (intention) as the foundation of any motivation. She further advised to always remember why you started and when things get tough, go back to your niat

She noted in the interview that one of her greatest challenges was data collection, a daunting task for her as an introvert since she had to approach people in person. Compounding the challenge was her lack of prior training in data analysis software. Despite this, Ainul tackled each obstacle with a courageous heart, supported by her love for research and knowledge.

For students facing struggles in their studies, Ainul offered words of encouragement, “It’s going to be difficult and you will have regrets. But at the end of the day, it’s all part of our intellectual maturity and growth. Keep pushing forward.”

Her journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of resilience, a support system, and a strong sense of purpose in life. May Allah grant her blessings and success in her future voyage.***
