Closing Ceremony of COMETIC 2024 Marks Successful Ending

Kuala Lumpur, October 17, 2024 – The Communication and Media Centre International Conference 2024 (COMETIC 2024) concluded today with an impactful closing ceremony held at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC-IIUM) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education, YB Senator Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry bin Abdul Kadir, alongside the Rector of the IIUM, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Osman Bakar. Both dignitaries delivered speeches that underscored the importance of media literacy and innovation in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.

During his address, YB Senator Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry emphasized the need for higher educational institutions to promote media literacy to develop critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze the credibility of sources.

“Universities like the IIUM must equip the next generation with the skills, to reflect and distinguish decent information from misinformation,” he said. 

While Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Osman, in his speech, highlighted the importance of paying attention to conveying the truth to society and the technical aspects of communication in the different types of media.

At the end of his speech, he highlighted, “Let us not forget that we are human beings with human values and let us not lose ourselves.”

Head of the Department of Communication and Director of COMETIC 2024, Associate Dr. Tengku Aisha binti Tengku Azman, extended her heartfelt gratitude to all academics, administrative staff, and students involved in organizing the successful event.

As her speech concluded, she expressed a remarkable quote, “The connections and ideas made here, along with the exchange of ideas, will undoubtedly inspire our work moving forward.”

The two-day conference featured keynote addresses, panel discussions, and paper presentations on diverse topics, including media ethics, digital communication, and the role of social media in shaping public opinion.

The event, which brought together academics, industry experts, and media professionals, focused on the latest trends and research in communication and media studies.

With the conclusion of the 2024 conference, participants were encouraged to focus on improving media literacy, ethical communication, and innovation in the digital age.***
