KUALA LUMPUR, 20 March 2023: It is vital for new graduates to learn how to adapt and be flexible to the changing times for them to prepare for the dynamic working life, mentioned Dr. Nur Shakira Binti Mohd Nasir, a speaker for a career talk yesterday (19 March).
Aimed to expose the youth with practical advice on career mentality and knowledge, the mini career talk session took place at the Convention Centre Kuala Lumpur, at the Youth Empowerment Fair 2023 (YEF2023).
Dr. Nur Shakira who is also an Assistant Professor of the Department of Communication, IIUM, said students should read the news, and do research on trends and the job market so as to not be left behind when it comes to working opportunities.
According to her, the issue of youth’s adaptability has been going around forever, but it can be seen clearly especially when the pandemic of COVID-19 hit the country.
“When working from home is being practiced during the pandemic, many students – especially those who are doing internships – found it is difficult to adapt with the changes, as no one is able to mentor them due to the circumstances.
“One needs to be able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses, so they could leverage on their strengths and make it an opportunity to achieve the career that suits them.”
“You would never know your potential until you try,” said Dr. Nur Shakira during a mini talk session entitled, “Getting Ready to Take Your First Step in Your Career”.
Dr. Nur Shakira also urged the youth to take their first step and try something new as an initiative for their future career development.
She added that students need to gain as much experience to be marketable by joining university societies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and any volunteering programmes.
Organised by Minds for Malaysia in conjunction with Yayasan Gostrong Malaysia, the session started at 11.30 a.m. until 12.30 p.m. and was attended by some 30 audiences from various backgrounds and universities.***
