GOMBAK, 19 August 2022: Quoting a famous legal maxim, الغرم بالغنم, which means ‘One is entitled to a gain if one agrees to bear the responsibility for the loss,’ hence, comes Abdul Hakim’s motto, ‘Success is accompanied by great sacrifices,’ which he held onto in his studies until his efforts paid off.

The 25-year-old graduate, Abdul Hakim bin Suhaimi, from AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (AHAS KIRKHS) received the Best Student (Academic) Award in the 10th session of the 37th IIUM Convocation.

During an interview with IIUMToday, he said he was not expecting to receive any award since his batch graduated online.

Abdul Hakim received the Best Student (Academic).

Like other students, he also faced difficulties when studying at IIUM. However, he has his own study technique, which he believes helped him throughout the semesters.

The award winner happily shared the following tips to achieve success:

  • Summarize the lessons by handwriting them on a piece of paper.
  • Highlight notes and read the paper notes several times.
  • Discuss with friends the night before examinations.
  • If possible, try to teach those who are in need.
  • Read Surah Yassin and ask your mother to pray for your success.

Abdul Hakim also recounted that, “Every single time I achieved something in life, I was always supported by their good prayers and kind words, which I believe is a source of motivation in my life,” Abdul Hakim said.

When asked for advice for students currently studying at IIUM, he said they should believe in their efforts as it will determine their end results. His advice was based on the common Sunnatullah, “You will get what you work for.”

Although some may complain that their hard work may not be in line with their results, he believed that everything comes from Allah, and therefore, He gives His blessing to whomever He wants.

“Believe that your hard work may not help you this time, but it shall not fail your work next time,” he added.

Although his undergraduate path had ended, he is currently furthering his study in a master’s program, Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh, at IIUM.***
