Rector on restoring the soul and values of education

By Sarah Rashdi

GOMBAK, 19 August 2022: The devoid of values, soul, and humanitarian concern in today’s education has allowed it to be treated as a product to be commercialised in a marketplace, said the IIUM Rector, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak in the 11th session of the 37th IIUM Convocation Ceremony yesterday morning (18 August 2022).

A total of 636 graduates from Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences (KENMS) were exhorted to use their acquired knowledge to bring back ethics to where it belongs, to avoid mishaps, corruption, and unethical practices according to what is demanded in Islam.

œAs IIUM graduates, you are unique. You have two important ideas of revealed and acquired knowledge. With the right education, the right spirit, and the right compassion, you should be able to put things right in its proper perspective, he said.

The Rector advised the graduates to cast aside the act of pure selfishness. Educated individuals must care for one another, not just their own community or country as all are part of humanity.

He added, œThe society and the world out there, is waiting for you, is waiting for us, particularly the young, the brave, the bold and courageous one, who are able to speak the language that other people understand, and also to put things right when it is necessary.

He reminded the graduates to grab the opportunity to show their capability in demonstrating kindness and empathy to change the lives of people.

œGive as much as you can rather than just to receive from this university. As alumni, it is time to pay back what you have owed to the University as the University has invested a great deal in you. Carry the flag of IIUM as high, as visible, and as proud as possible, in whatever you do in your life. Let the community around the world feels the difference that IIUM is making through its graduates. Let it be known that we are ready to contribute and to make the knowledge that you have received beneficial for others, he called on the graduates.

The recipients of the Kulliyyah Level Awards in this session were:

  • Best Student (Overall) & Best Student (Academic): Muhammad Rizwan bin Md Tahir
  • Best Student (Co-Curricular): Maisarah binti Lukman.***
