GOMBAK, 27 April 2022: The upcoming IIUM Student Union (IIMSU) election to be held on 21 May this year will see the new leadership of the student union bringing more benefits to the the students following the recent amendments to its constitution.

A meeting of IIUMSU Central Emergency Parliament on 16 April had discussed three proposed amendments which were passed with simple majority votes and later approved by the Registrar of Society (ROS) Malaysia on 25 April with immediate effect.

The upcoming election will be an office seat based election where it will no longer follow the previous format of running for kulliyyah constituency as the candidates will contest and be voted for the office chosen. The amendments were made in clause 8.1, 8.2.8 and 13.5 of the IIUM Student Union Constitution.

There will be an addition of two seats for international constituency in the general seat to ensure that the union will be more focused and dynamic in catering to the affairs of international students. The said amendment can be reflected in clause 8.2 of the IIUM Student Union Constitution.

An additional one seat for both Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer seat as part of IIUM Student Union executive committee for Pagoh campus was approved to facilitate the operation of IIUMSU in that campus. Hence, it calls for the legitimacy of the seats to be contested. These amendments were done in clause 8.2.5 and 8.2.7 in the same IIUM Student Union Constitution.

The tenure of IIUMSU for 2021/2022 ended following the Annual General Meeting conducted last Saturday (23 April). ***
