My honest feeling on how to keep up with current challenges

By Amirul Syafiq bin Yusry

Hey there! I hope when reading this article, you are comfortable. Unclench your jaw and take a deep, long breath, then let it all out, slowly¦

I wish you all the very best of health. So, let me tell you about my journey when writing this piece. Honestly, I have exactly no clue what to write. It has been so long since I wrote anything for publishing.

So, I implore the help of our best companion, Google and search for a topic. On the very top of the search results is a bit of advice to write something important yet personal to me. So, here I am writing about knowing and taking care of yourself during the pandemic as a tertiary student.

I know these are challenging times for us students (and lecturers alike). Online classes require us to be more focused than ever and some may even face difficulties like Internet problems, interruptive family members and time management. The truth is you are not alone.

All of us are faced with problems of some sort. I found it even difficult to juggle my personal leisure time and assignments that are piling as time passes. Dont even start about the numerous times of my moms barging into my room during online sessions and earphone dysfunction.

These are things beyond our control, we have to forgive ourselves and chin up! It is the process of learning and adapting to the new norm. You, me and all of us have done well, you deserve a pat on the back. Truthfully.

Besides, I also want to share four tips I did to ease my learning experience:

  • Firstly, I write down a to-do list daily. This will keep track of my progress both academically and personally. For example, today, I have ticked my Islamic Literature poster assignment, my Global Discourse and Diversity essay outline and washing my blanket.
  • Apart from this, I also take a little break in between my chores. I listen to music and read some reading materials but you can do it in your own way, of course. It is crucial so that you will not feel too occupied and draggy.
  • Moreover, I eat sparingly as well. I prefer a light breakfast so I wont be sleepy and if I have an afternoon class, I avoid the second serving of rice. Sleepiness results in a lack of focus!
  • Hydration is important, too. Keep a bottle of water near your study station so you can quench your thirst without showing anything underneath your cameras angle. (Trust me, I have been caught wearing kain pelekat with a button-up shirt for a presentation once. Learn from my mistakes!)

I hope sharing these tips would help you even at a minuscule level. I also hope that reading this article makes your feelings valid and seen. Being a student is a commendable act in the eyes of Allah but remember as well that He will not burden His servants beyond their capabilities. We can do this, brothers and sisters! Stay safe and be in Allahs protection always.***
