IIUM Student Union Election 2021: Make way for the Game Changers!

GOMBAK, 16 March 2021: The IIUM Student Union Election 2021 will witness a total of 27 seats open for contest, 13 of which are general seats while 14 are kulliyyah seats.

The polling day for the student union election has been set on 9 April when voters will cast their votes from 9.00 a.m to 5.00 p.m, according to a statement from the Chairman of the student body’s Election Commission released yesterday.

It added that the nomination day will be held on 2 April and prospective candidates will be required to submit their nomination papers from 9.00 a.m to 11.00 a.m.

The statement said that this announcement is intended to inform all registered students of IIUM that the election shall take place as determined by the IIUM Student Union Election Commission, details of which are stated as follows:

NOMINATION DAY

POLLING DAY

9th April 2021 (Friday), 9.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m.

As announced by the Election Commission of IIUM Student Union Election 2021, there are 27 seats in total to be contested.

2. For the president’s seat, general and kulliyyah constituency, the rules of the nomination and election are as follows:

i) Nomination:

  • The candidate(s) for the president’s seat, general and kulliyyah constituency must be a full-time active, registered student of IIUM and a member of IIUM Student Union.
  • Additionally, the candidate(s) for the kulliyyah constituency must also be an active, full-time, registered student on their respective kulliyyah.

ii) Election:

  • Candidate(s) for the president seat and general seat shall be voted by all of the registered voters of IIUM while for the kulliyyah constituency, candidate(s) shall be voted only by registered voters of the respective kulliyyah.

3. Prospective candidates must themselves collect the nomination form. A candidate can be nominated for one seat only.

4. It is required for the candidate, his/her proposer, and seconder to submit the nomination form personally during specified time to be notified by the election secretariat.

5. Only students who fulfill the following conditions shall be eligible for nomination to the IIUM Student Union Election:

  • Must be a full-time, active student of IIUM and a member of the IIUM Student Union;
  • Obtained a CGPA of not less than 2.80 at the time of nomination and not less than 3.00 for the president’s seat at the time of nomination.;
  • Have completed at least one regular semester and have yet to undergo at least one academic year to graduate from the university;
  • Have not been required to repeat one or more semesters;
  • Serve as good examples to others by completing the candidate workshop;
  • Never been found guilty and convicted of any disciplinary offence under students’ discipline rules 2004 (Amendment 2006) except for compoundable offences;
  • Of good moral character and observed the Islamic code of conduct as required by the university rules and regulations;
  • Not a member of the election commission, election working committee, election tribunal committee, election audit committee, the legislative assembly; and
  • Any other qualifications may be determined by election commission from time to time.

6. A candidate shall not be a proposer or seconder of another candidate.

7. A proposer or seconder shall not propose or second more than one candidate.

8. Each respective candidate can only register their candidacy for one (1) seat.

9. Nomination form could be found on the iTasweet website, which will be made available on 28th March 2021.

10. Candidate(s) are required to pay RM50 to register. The amount paid consists of the non-refundable purchase of the nomination form which amounts to RM10. The remaining RM40 serve as a deposit for the candidate(s).

  • The deposit will be refunded to the candidate if they manage to abide by the IIUM Student Union Election rules and regulations.

11. Payment must be made before submitting the nomination form. Payment can be made to the treasurer of IIUMSU Election Commission, Br. Muhamad Ariff Bin Mohd Dzulkonnain:

12. Prospective candidate(s) are required to fill the nomination form in person. The election commission has the right to refuse a prospective candidate or their representative(s) from collecting the nomination form if these requirements are not fulfilled.

13. The process of obtaining recommendations from the respective deputy deans (Student Development and Community Engagement), mahallah principals, and the Office of Security Management (OSem) will be initiated by the IIUM Student Union Election Commission after the nomination form has been submitted.

14. All nominated candidates are required to attend a briefing session with the chairman of the Election Commission after the final list of the nominated candidates is displayed.
