Being a “Berjaya” Muslim as in BMW

By Siti Maryam Moesha binti Mukhliz

PAGOH, 1 December 2020: A four-day programme organised to enhance and create a global and successful Muslim was probably the greatest initiative carried out by MRC of Mahallah Zaid bin Harithah 2020/2021.

It was “Berjaya Muslim Week” or what was affectionately called BMW. Just like the successful German automaker.

Successful? If you wanted to be a successful Muslim, then this might be the answer.

Berjaya Muslim Week or BMW was conducted on 15 to 18 November (Sunday to Wednesday) in conjunction with three international celebrations: The World Diabetes Day, The International Day for Tolerance and The World Philosophy Day.

The sessions were streamed live on Facebook and have attracted a healthy number of 2,321 online participants.

Che Najwan, a medical student from USMKLE India, shared his knowledge concerning ‘Health as A Human Rights in Islam’, particularly on diabetes.

He highlighted that it is important for health providers to spread health information in the simplest way possible to help educate more Malaysians and that is what has been emphasised in Islam which is Ad-Deen, meaning, the way of life.

“There are five crucial tips to the implementation of tolerance in volunteering; Listen first, talk later; Give first, take later; Give more and take less; To understand rather than criticise; Invest first, profit later,” he said quoting Dr. Adha Shaleh, an expert in sociology and anthropology, who has been active not only in volunteering in Singapore but also co-developed a training module on community engagement skills.

“Volunteering has changed my perspective towards social issues and stereotypes of certain communities and thus, it has built my character as a human being.” Che Najwan was emphasising on Surah Maidah, verse 2; “cooperate with others in goodness and piety” throughout his session on volunteerism.

The third day of BMW was a huge hit with the topic ‘Studying Abroad: What They DON’T Tell You?’ which attracted 843 participants worldwide.

The famous YouTuber twins, Puteri Syasya, who is studying at Kyung Hee University, Seoul, said, “We’re in a non-Islamic country, it is important to show that we are a good Mukmin and unknowingly we are spreading the beauty of Islam. The Islam that has not been fairly portrayed in the media worldwide.”

Meanwhile, her sister, Puteri Aisyah said: “We are bringing the Malaysian identity everywhere we go, we must always be reminded and adhere to the teaching of Islam regardless of the religion and culture of the country.”

Strengthening the point uttered by Puteri Aisyah, the third speaker, Firdaus Shahir, who is currently studying for his Bachelor’s degree in Qiraat Studies added a Quranic verse, “… made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.” (Al-Hujurat:13).

Firdaus stressed that the noblest person is not of one’s race or culture, but it is the person who is with the most taqwa.

“As a Muslim, we interpret things differently. We believe in His decision and whatever happens to us, there must be a hikmah, so just remember Allah SWT and believe in His plans,” Firdaus said.

Meanwhile, Anis Farhana from University of Southampton gave some tips on how to see and approach challenging situations in our life.

Dr. Nizamuddin Alias, a senior lecturer at Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) who spoke on the final day of BMW shared with the audience three main advice to be a successful youth.

Firstly, he said, “always prioritise mental and physical health.” Next is “to engage with the community and give what you can.” Lastly, he called on the audience to be strong and be prepared when experiencing the expected and unexpected.

He pointed out, “Success is not easy and there are three pillars in gaining knowledge. Read! Read! and Read!”

This four-day travel wonder found the participants in awe of the knowledge gained throughout the journey. We’ve travelled to India, Singapore, South Korea, Egypt, United Kingdom and flew back home to Malaysia for the finale.

Participants creatively labelled this insightful event as an EduVacation “trip” organised by our very own MRC Mahallah Zaid bin Harithah Airlines. Boarding the Mahallah Zaid bin Harithah Airlines, now everyone can learn, no matter where you are in the world.

Being a pilot project, it was a massive success and a huge accomplishment for the Berjaya Muslim Week organiser.

Participation was immense with the questions and the support was overwhelming throughout the events.

Mr. Khaidir Sahid, the advisor and Principal of Mahallah Zaid bin Harithah closed the programme by expressing his deepest appreciations and gratitude to all the participants of the four-day event. He thanked the committee members for organising the webinar.

He was happy to note that the programme was beneficial to both the participants and the organisers. He said that he is looking forward to the next BMW 2.0 with more spectacular topics.
