GOMBAK, 1 September 2020: A book entitled “Student Union: Generasi Baharu Gerakan Mahasiswa” (English: The New Generation of Student Movement) was launched here in IIUM today to commemorate student leadership and independent autonomy.
The book, which was launched by Associate Professor Dr. Zulkifli Hasan, Deputy Rector from the Office of Student Development & Community Engagement (ODRSCE), and Amir Nadzim, IIUM Student Union (IIUMSU) President, encompasses the hustle and bustle of the members of the IIUMSU to make the entity known in the university as well as the nation.
“The book is first of its kind, written and launched by the students,” Dr. Zulkifli said in his opening speech.
“It mirrors the contents of the book as a remembrance that students are in control of their future,” he said.
Amir Nadzim then added that this book will not only reflect the IIUMSU’s motto that serves the student autonomy, but also as a reflection of the student autonomy in an Islamic university – “From the students, for the Ummah, by the students,” Amir said.
The book launch was then followed by a forum titled Mahasiswa dan Pembangunan Negara Halatuju Reformasi Negara (English: Student and Development of Nation towards Higher Educational Reformation), moderated by Farida Hanim, IIUMSU committee.
The forum focused on empowering students and how to overcome the “culture of fear” that has hindered students from speaking up for their rights.
Among the panelists were Julfitri Joha, President of the Malaysian Youth Council; Atiqah Zulkifli, former IIUM Students’ Representative Council 2014/2015; and Wan Harith, Advisor of the IIUMSU.
