GamesMY IIUM, a beginning to lead the way in Esports

GOMBAK, 13 December 2019: In establishing a platform for students to express their passion in Esports, in line with the Esports Blueprint by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to promote Esports in Malaysia, GamesMY Studio was successfully launched by Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT) and GamesMY.

GamesMY IIUM Studio was officiated by Deputy Rector (Student Development and Community Engagement), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Hasan, in a ceremony held at GamesMY Studio, Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT) on Thursday (12 December).

Present at the launching ceremony were Director of Sports Development Centre (SDC), Asst. Prof. Dr. Mahyuddin Bin Daud, Deputy Dean (Student Development and Community Engagement), KICT, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Syarqawy Hamzah, Chief Executive Officer of GamesMY Sdn. Bhd., Mr. Luqman Haqim Mat Hasan, Private Secretary to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Amshar Aziz and Special Officer to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Luqman Long.

GamesMY IIUM Studio is the second branch of GamesMY, owned by Luqman Haqim and managed by Mohamed Azmudeen Barrat Husain and team. The official smartphone partner is Realme, an emerging smartphone brand.

In his opening speech, Mr. Luqman said, “GamesMY is an Esports organisation aimed to develop and nurture talents in IIUM to be Esports ready. We believe that Esports talents must not be restricted from enhancing their ability. By doing this, we can produce more professional players to represent our country at international level.”

He added that GamesMY was the first one to have its branch in institutions of higher learning, and IIUM was the first university to provide this special platform for students to engage more in Esports.

“GamesMy Esports will be the pioneer in providing platform for students and players to train in their respective campus. Moreover, GamesMY Studio in IIUM will be the pioneer in this revolution of Esports studio and become the role model for other universities to involve in Esports industry.”

He then emphasised on the existence of research department known as CIDEX consists of IIUM professors, doctors and lecturers who will assist them in providing proper Esports Arena for students with professional, healthy and ethical gaming environment.

Mr. Luqman hoped that everyone can cooperate and work together in empowering Esports among the university students and bring them to the higher level.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Hasan expressed his relief regarding the establishment of a research department that developed the parameters and guiding principle of Esports.

“In IIUM, we fully support any initiative related to student development, including Esports, as long as it is within the permissible and ethical context. Thus, it is fulfilled through this CIDEX. This guideline helps in ensuring that students are not only playing game, but they can learn something beneficial from Esports and discover their talents.”

“Young generation embraces Esports. So, it is impractical if we disallow the young generation to involve in Esports. What university needs to do is utilising and optimising this GamesMY studio for the benefit of student development,” he added.

Prior to officially declaring the opening of GamesMY Studio, Prof. Dr. Zulkifli stated that IIUM will be leading the way including Esports, Islamisation and Integration of Esports in the context of Rahmatan Lil- ‘Alamin.
