Firdaus’ voluntary spirit that drives him to help stray cats

GOMBAK, 14 October 2019- Despite volunteering independently on his own initiative, founder of Abam’s Furry Shelter, Mohd Firdaus, 39, never considered his idea to give new hope to 70 stray cats.

Located at Kajang, the idea to create the shelter was started when he often feeds the cat that he meets. Abam’s Furry Shelter is one of the non-governmental organisations which had taken action to help reduce cat abuse cases in Malaysia.

“The purpose of this shelter is to help stray sick cats especially those involved with accidents, had broken legs and badly-injured,” Firdaus said when met at his booth during the Cat Day in Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT) last Sunday (13 October), adding that “the voluntary initiative could spread awareness to the society.”

He also added that recently there were few cases and events of animal abuse happening in the country. With help of the public around in Peninsular Malaysia through informing him or through contacting him personally, he had actively acted to foster the cat.

Despite the shelters not being funded permanently, Firdaus did not feel reluctant to use his pocket money as he still wished to do it voluntarily.

“The services under Abam’s furry shelter are pet taxi, nursing and personal shopper where public can be part of the rescue team by reaching us if they see the sick stray cat,” he said.

In addition, Mohd Firdaus also gave some recommendations for IIUM community to meet the needs of cats, which he had prepared and provided the litter box for cat’s disposal as to teach the cat.

Firdaus reminded the students to check his social media account @Mohd firdaus fabian abdullah on Instagram. ***
