Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar is IIUM’s eight President

GOMBAK, 11 July 2019: IIUM Constitutional Head, Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, has consented to the appointment of Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar as the eight President of IIUM for three years effective 1 July 2019.

The university’s Office for Communication, Advocacy and Promotion, in its statement released today, said that Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud had wide experience with IIUM having been the Deputy Rector (Student Affairs) from 2002 to 2005. He started his career as a lecturer in IIUM in 1989.

Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud is now the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of “Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam” (YaPEIM). He is also on the Syariah advisory board of Islamic financial institutions within and outside the country. He is the founder of Amanie Advisors, a company that provides advisory services on Islamic finance.

In 2014, he received the “Tokoh Perdana Anugerah Maulidur Rasul” from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the national-level Malidur Rasul celebration.

Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud had his earlier education in Sekolah Kebangsaan Sg. Korok Baru in Alor Star, Kedah (1970-1976), Maktab Mahmud (1977-1979) and Kolej Islam (1980-1983).

He then continued his studies in Syariah at the University of Kuwait (1983-1988). Later (from 1990 to 1993) he went to the University of St. Andrews, United Kingdom and obtained his PhD. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jurisprudence from the University of Malaya.

During the last two decades until today Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud has been active and recognised among outstanding contributors in Islamic finance.

According to the press statement, his appointment would help to raise the profile of IIUM to become a respected institution among both the local and international community.

The university also thanked the former IIUM President, Dr. Maszlee Malik for his contributions in leading the university from September to November last year. ***
